How does a rain sensor work?

Good question! It’s actually an interesting concept, which has nothing to do with water and everything to do with light. Rain sensors work on the principle of total reflection. The sensor has an infrared light beam that sends light towards the windshield at a 45 degree angle. The light gets reflected back into the sensor by the glass. When it rains, water droplets collect on the glass and scatter the infrared light, so not all of the light is reflected back into the sensor. The sensor sees this, and based on set parameters, activates the wipers at a certain level of light being scattered and not reflected. In the case of the ReierParts Rain Sensing Wiper Kit, there are four preset sensitivity levels in the rain sensor control.
