The Saab 9-3ss was the first (and only) Saab to come out with a fiber optic network in the car, allowing all audio, navigation and telephone modules to communicate with eachother at high speeds. A great idea, with a major downside; if the fiber loop is incomplete, the audiosystem won’t go into ‘rest’ and will drain the battery in hours.
The result of this fiber optic network is that it’s very difficult to replace the OEM radio and ICM for something aftermarket, as removing the factory items completely will make the fiber loop incomplete and cause the car to not function correctly. Furthermore, the turn signal clicks and any other warning chimes the car makes are sent through the amplifier to the speakers, so leaving it mounted and tapping into the speaker wires will render the car without those warning chimes.
The easiest option to get some modern functionality out of the factory setup, is to install a good quality bluetooth car kit. By using this kit, the handsfree kit will mute the head-unit during calls and send the audio to the front speakers only. Streaming music will be sent directly to the aux input in the back of the OEM head-unit, bypassing the low-powered amplifier these kits come with and playing music through the factory audio system and amplifliers (if installed). A very ‘OEM+’ style install to ensure the best experience both calling and streaming through bluetooth!

NOTE: On US model cars with OnStar still active, it’s possible that incoming calls through this setup will cause an OnStar issue. Easiest way to get rid of this error is to bypass the OnStar system entirely. Get OE connector part number 12791237 to install onto the fiber optics wiring, disconnect the other connector on the module and the error should disappear without affecting the rest of the car.
